WORDLESS WEDNESDAY - Creepy Crawly Critters!

Spider in Charlotte NC

Spider in Charlotte NC

This creepy critter spun a web in my yard today.  Does anyone know what kind it is?  Should I be scared?  Spiders give me the creeps anyway, no matter if they're harmless!

Hi Melissa, I don't know what it is, but I sure wouldn't want it dropping on top of me.  Hope it traps lots of insects for you.

Melissa. I hate spiders! I think this is a sort of Garden spider. I'm not an expert, I just kill them all when I can.  I killed a FAT Black Widow in a home I showed, yesterday.

Whether I should or shouldn't, I would be scared. It's actually a beautiful creature, but I wouldn't get too close!

Melissa, I don't know what it is but I do know that it is not a brown recluse or black widow.  Those are the main two poisinous that I know about so if not in the house it can just trap the insects like Liz said. I was bitten by a brown recluse when I was 22 and ended up having plastic surgery on the back of my leg. I have to admit that has given me a big scare of spiders.

Melissa - Great close up photo!    What camera are you using?

Oh!   By the way, I LOVE spiders - but only outside.  I think if I lived anywhere besides New England, I might feel differently, but here most are harmless.

Holy cow, so many comments in just 5 minutes!

Bob, always nice to have the master stop by!

Liz, I almost walked into the web and my husband screamed "STOP" right before I walked into it.  I would have had a heart attack, for sure!

Don, I literally got chills when I read your comment.  A black widow?  Bet the buyers didn't want that house!

Margo, it IS really pretty....from a distance!

Marchel - I've heard of brown recluses causing awful problems.  We do have them in NC.  I personally stay away from ALL spiders!

Hi Melissa~  It is fascinating to look at, but I wouldn't want it anywhere near where I am.  Great shot!

Hey Dagny,

I used a Nikon D-60.  Since I was too afraid to get up close, I cropped the photo until it became more of a close-up.

Weren't we taught to stay away from insects, especially spiders that were colorful and had distinct markings?

EWWWWWWW, I was afraid to look at this, but did.  I googled it and nothing came up.  Good luck......  LOL.

Melissa, I don't like spiders!  I know that they have a place in the eco system, I am not sure what it is, but there has to be a reason for them!  Great photos!

Not sure what type of spider, but that's quite an expansive web! Nice pic, Melissa!

Thanks all for your comments!  Who would have thought a creepy crawlie would generate so many comments! I think we all agree - these things are nasty, and we should all STAY AWAY!
