Mecklenburg County Tax Revaluation 2011 - What You Should Know
When most Mecklenburg County residents opened their letters from the county assessor's office last week, they were in for a rude awakening! The new Mecklenburg County Tax Revaluation for 2011 resulted in significant increases in property tax values for most residents. The average increase across the Charlotte region was 20%, but some owners found their home values increased by over 100%! The Charlotte areas hit hardest by foreclosures and short sales may have found that their tax values decreased, but overall, most residents have seen their tax values rise.
NC law requires that counties reassess values at least every 8 years. Mecklenburg County has not revalued properties since 2003. The revaluation process is intended to have homeowners pay their fair share of property taxes, based on the tax values of their home, neighborhood and area. Remember... this new assessment is only one part of the equation! The Mecklenburg County Commission (and town councils within the county) will be determining the tax rate to apply to our new tax values before July 1, 2011.
